Tornto IP is an independent think tank that researches and advises on diverse aspects of innovation, intelelctual property rights , media law, digital law, and the legal challenges associated with deployment of information technology or artificial intelligence (AI) or AI-run diverse digital technologies.

We firmly believe that comprehensive legal analysis will play a pivotal role in fostering a knowledge-based, sustainable digital world.

WHAT WE DO? ​

RESEARCH

Conducting in-depth research on various aspects of intellectual property rights, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.
Developing policy recommendations and advocating for reforms in intellectual property laws, media regulations, and technology policies to promote innovation, creativity, and the public interest.

Publishing research papers, articles, and reports on cutting-edge topics, legal developments, and policy issues in intellectual property, media law, and technology law.

Examining various legal aspects related to media, including print, broadcast, digital, and social media. This encompasses areas such as freedom of speech, defamation, privacy, copyright, intellectual property, regulation of media content, media ownership, access to information, and the intersection of media with other legal domains like technology, entertainment, and telecommunications.
Exploring the legal implications, challenges, and opportunities arising from advancements in artificial intelligence and digital technologies. This includes examining legal frameworks governing AI development, deployment, and use, as well as issues related to data protection, privacy, cybersecurity, algorithmic accountability, intellectual property rights, liability, and ethical considerations.

CONSULTING

Providing expertise in the legal and regulatory challenges associated with the deployment of artificial intelligence and other digital technologies, including data privacy, algorithmic accountability, and ethical considerations.
Developing customized intellectual property strategies to help clients maximize the value of their intellectual assets, mitigate risks, and achieve their business objectives.
Offering strategic advice and guidance to businesses, organizations, and individuals on intellectual property strategies, media law compliance, technology licensing, and contract negotiations.
Conducting workshops, seminars, and training programs to educate stakeholders about intellectual property rights, media law principles, and best practices in technology law and regulation.
Collaborating with industry partners, research institutions, and government agencies to address emerging legal and policy issues in intellectual property, media, and technology law.

Assisting clients in resolving intellectual property disputes, media-related lawsuits, and technology-related litigation through negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and litigation support services.

Engaging with international organizations, policymakers, and stakeholders to promote global cooperation, knowledge sharing, and capacity building in the fields of intellectual property, media law, and technology regulation.

Engaging with international organizations, policymakers, and stakeholders to promote harmonization of intellectual property laws, standards, and enforcement mechanisms on a global scale.

Mahatab Uddin

Founder

Mahatab Uddin, Ph.D. in Law (Aarhus), LL.M (Intellectual Property Law) (Stockholm), MSc. (Sustainable Development) (Uppsala), is an expert in intellectual property law, technology law, and various branches of public international law concerning climate change and sustainable development.

His advanced-level scholarly contributions in the fields of intellectual property law, technology law, and sustainable development have been published by various leading journals, including those from Yale Law School, Columbia Law School, The George Washington University Law School, Pace Law School, and San Francisco Law School. He is the sole author of the book ‘Climate Change Law, Technology Transfer, and Sustainable Development,’ published by Routledge, UK. Additionally, he serves as the Chief Editor of IP & Brand Bulletin, a biannual online magazine.

Dr. Uddin has taught at various universities in Asia, Europe, and North America. He currently holds positions as an adjunct professor and post-doctoral researcher at the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development at the University of Guelph, Canada, where he researches potential legal frameworks for AI-driven climate-smart agricultural practices. He is also a Digital Policy Hub Fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) in Waterloo, Canada. He can be reached at mahatab@uoguelph.ca.

Md. Saimum Reza Talukder

Director

Md. Saimum Reza Talukder holds the position of Senior Lecturer at the BRAC University School of Law. Mr. Saimum is a member of the Artificial Intelligence Working Group (AIWG), an initiative of
the Hannah Arendt Center for Politics and Humanities at Bard College, USA. The AIWG focuses on the intersections between Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence, emphasizing their societal impact in a
democratic environment. He also participates in the Bangladesh Internet Freedom Initiative Working Group, a civil society project backed by regional and global non-governmental organizations.
Mr. Saimum now concentrates on the legal facets of Big Data, AI, digital rights, and net neutrality. Mr. Saimum possesses a specialized Master’s degree in Law and Digital Technologies from Leiden University, Netherlands. He has finished his LLM and LLB at the University of Chittagong. He also received a post-graduate diploma in Social Innovation in a Digital Context from Lund University, Sweden.

Muhammed Atiqur Rahman

Muhammed Atiqur Rahman, PhD in Law (Macquire), LL.M (Intellectual Property Law) (Lund) is a highly accomplished and respected university teacher with specialized expertise in intellectual property law.

He delved deep into the nuances of intellectual property law, understanding the intricacies of the subject. Driven by a passion for fostering creativity and protecting innovation, he devoted himself to unraveling the complex legal frameworks governing intellectual property rights.

Dr. Atiq is also actively involved in research, publication, and community services. His unwavering commitment to intellectual property law and his impact on legal education have earned him numerous scholarships throughout his career.
